Shelter is
foundational to our life. We spend much
of our time and resources finding and keeping our shelter. Our home provides the essential place for personal health and security,
family development, and the expression of beauty and style. It is the place where we grow
old. Our home, along with all the others, are key components of the character of the
community as well as expressions of our own character.
Good shelter adds to our life while
poor or inadequate shelter takes away from it. Good shelter is:
a healthy place to live,
-
appropriate to our physical abilities
-
affordable enabling other needs to be met,
a place of beauty and design,
-
an object of careful maintenance,
-
a setting for personal and family growth,
-
a fitting element of the community,
-
our refuge of privacy,
-
stewardly in it use of land and resources,
-
kind to the environment.
Poor shelter significantly fails in one or more of the above.
Our understanding of justice, stewardship, beauty, family, and
community is played out in the very ordinary acts of buying, selling, maintaining,
decorating, or caring whether or not everyone has a decent place to live.
