Packing and Moving Day

The day itself is a blur. So be prepared before the movers come. Its not helpful to your stress level to be packing when they arrive. Here is a packing and moving checklist that may help you to remember those forgettable but ever so important details.

(A special note: I've just moved and believe me, this check list will save your life. I also worked for Allied Van Lines summers when I was in university. This is a good list. D.H.)

  • Obtain packing paper, pad for inventory, marking pens and boxes.

  • Get fibreglas filament tape, its worth the extra price. Forget masking tape.

  • Obtain boxes or containers, and packing materials i.e. bubble wrap, Styrofoam, newspaper etc. Wednesday is a good day at the liquor store.

  • note: when using newspaper to pack anything be aware that the ink rubs off.

  • Empty gas from lawnmower, outboard motors, etc.

  • Remove batteries from toys or appliances if your belongings are going into storage.

  • Get floor plan of new home. Have family members agree on the room in which items will be place in the new house.

  • Mark boxes clearly as to contents and room to be put in. Use a large peel off label.

  • Set aside things you will carry in car in boxes marked "Do Not Load".

  • Mark boxes you want loaded last and unloaded first.

  • Tie or tape curtain rods, mops and brooms into bundles.

  • Point out and mark fragile or delicate items.

  • If you are going a short distance, move your electronic equipment, especially your computer, yourself.

  • Carry money, jewelry and valuable papers with you.

  • Do not overload drawers when packing items in dressers.

  • Put bolts and screws in a bag and place in the top drawer of a dresser or cabinet in the same room.

  • Liquids in bottles should have tops secured.

  • Blankets and towels are best moved in large boxes; pillows in dresser drawers. However, if you are careful you can use these items to protect art work or other delicate items.

  • Large mirrors, glass table tops and valuable pictures can be crated.

  • Pack lampshades in boxes by themselves.

  • Shelves in fridge or stove should be secured with tape.

  • Wrap and pack small appliances in bottom of boxes.

  • Do not pack cleaning products in same box as food.

  • Pack table lamps.

  • Place heavy china items at bottom of box:

  • Place flat china pieces on edge in a box with plenty of cushion at the bottom.

  • Small, breakable items should be packed in a small box inside a larger one.

  • Move clothes and drapes in a wardrobe supplied by mover or pack in large garbage bags.

  • Take the beds apart, but do not roll mattresses or rugs; leave for movers (special containers).

  • Do not wrap furniture or tie with rope, cover with moving blankets before being transported.

  • Large power tools should be dismantled for moving.

  • Leave furniture in place for movers to move.

  • Take down any fixtures fastened to wall.

  • Fill the garage with boxes to save money.

MOVING DAY

  • Be available for movers.

  • Keep personal luggage away from movers.

  • Set aside a few favourite toys for the children.

  • Put all valuables in a safe place.

  • Arrange for supplies for transition period, i.e. cleaning supplies, food, cups etc..

  • Make shopping list for first day.

  • Get keys to new home.

  • Remove trash.

  • Disconnect telephone.

  • Ensure doors and windows are locked.

  • Notify neighbours.

  • Turn down heat.

  • Have necessary papers, money, tickets, traveler's cheques with you. The movers will expect payment when finished.

  • Final check of basement, rooms, cupboards, attic and garage.

  • Keep copy of mover's inventory with you or in a safe place in case of serious loss or damage.

ARRIVING

  • Have children and pets elsewhere if possible.

  • Be available for movers.

  • Check off numbered boxes.

  • Check fragile cartons for damages or loss if possible.

  • List claims for damages.

  • Pay movers.

  • Check if heating and light fixtures work.

  • Unpack necessary items.

  • Get appliances hooked up.

  • Plan for the day's meals or ask neighbours for nearest restaurants.

  • Get kitchen and bedrooms set up first.

  • Collapse into bed.
