Life Lease developments offer a setting
for maintaining ones health. Prevention is the focus of the services. An emphasis on
well-being includes health promotion, such as exercise, nutrition
counselling, and
sometimes prepared meals. Seminars are held on health as well as other issues residents
may wish. All of this is at residents request. Each resident decides how much, if at
all, they wish to be involved with the programs offered in the development. All apartments or townhouses have the possibility of connecting to
the building wide Emergency Response system. If trouble comes, a push of a button and help
is on the way.
Many developments have a nurse or some other form of health
professional who visits weekly to follow up on resident health needs. The nurse does not
provide direct care but will assist in arranging for meals, home care, housekeeping, or
other services as required.
An emerging trend is the linking of Life Lease housing with
care provided though the Ministry of Health Long Term Care Division. Depending on
the size of the population and the need demonstrated, the Ministry of Health has shown
interest in providing personal care and housekeeping to those who have the need.
This approach works especially well when the Life Lease development is next to an existing
seniors population.
