Long Term Care - Where to Start |
| In Niagara seniors and children of seniors can
find it difficult to start the process of moving to shelter that is more suited to ones
health. My grandmother lived independently at home, active until she died at age 94.
Others I know are not so blessed. The children of seniors not only have to deal with a
parent's resistance to change, but often fight with their siblings. The whole process is difficult and the potential for doing the wrong thing at the
wrong time is great. Getting the right information is key. Many delay even researching the
options until a crisis at which time everyone's judgement is impaired. Seniors or family
members who feel a change may be needed should contact:
or
- contact the Community Care Access Centre. It provides
assistance by
-
answering questions and discussing options
-
determines whether you meet the criteria for placement in a long term
care facility
-
provides a list of long term care facilities to
visit
-
sends the assessment to the facility you select
-
maintains a waiting list for the facility you select
-
provides general financial information
-
suggests other programs they offer outside of Niagara.
-
offer suggestions and information about community programs such as Meals
on Wheels, Satellite Homes, Integrated Homemaking, Attendant Care, Day programs, Home
Care, Support Service Living Units, Caregiver Support Groups and others.
