Features of supportive (independent) housing:
-
In Niagara, all are rentals .
-
Provides an self-contained apartment, much like any unit in a normal apartment building.
-
One or two bedrooms along with appliances are usually included.
-
As the need arises, supportive services from staff in the building are available to
help.
-
Help includes light housekeeping, assistance with getting up or personal care like
bathing.
-
If more extensive help is required it usually means that a different type of
building is necessary, either in assisted care or long term care.
-
Meals are not necessarily a feature.
For example, if a senior were to fall and break a hip, it would normally mean a
hospital stay followed by nursing home care. In this case, support would be
available in the home. The care is flexible, adapting to the needs of the resident
rather than the resident moving to a building that is set up for a particular kind of
care.
Ina Grafton Gage Home, Albright Manor, all have supportive
services as part of the housing package. The first two have services connected to a
long term care facility.
