Ideas
and Options for Older Adults in Niagara
You will notice our reluctance here to use the word
"senior". We at JustShelter are all over 50,
some well over. We, like most other 'boomers' are not and will not be
seniors. It is conceit our generation laughs about,
albeit some what self-consciously.
However, reality is setting in. Every generation goes through changing stages of housing
needs. Every generation, as they get to be "people
of a certain age" first denies the need for change.

"We advise seniors,
and sometimes their supporting family, to help them understand the
full range of options open to them" |
Since you are reading this, you are either an older
adult or a family member looking for advice for parents.
You can define yourself, but from now on, we will use the
"S" word for simplicity. Besides, we might as
well grow up and get used to it. (However, and typical of our
generation, do so on our terms - or so we think.)
Our work as developers of housing for older adults and in
helping them move to more desirable housings has given us
countless conversations about what works best. This next
move for can be for some the most stressful of their
life. Kids can bounce from place to place with some
ease. We, however, have a life time of possessions, precious
neighbours, and memories to
sort out and downsize.
What is needed is objective advice about the full range of options
available in the market, covering both government subsidized
and private pay choices, and ranging from active adult independent living
settings through supportive service programs, assisted living,
congregate care and skilled nursing care.
We advise seniors,
and sometimes their supporting family, to help them understand the
full range of options open to them, and to stream-line the
often exhausting process of calling or visiting facilities. We
provide our clients with meet with them
to discuss their lifestyle and budget preferences and help
determine the best choices.
